Larry Paulson
Director, Provider Services
Larry has over 32 years of experience in healthcare, 25 years
in information systems. He has a solid history of successfully
providing the business and technology leadership and vision
necessary to define, develop, and execute IT solutions that
enhance the clinical and business processes of healthcare
organizations. He has an in-depth knowledge of clinical information
systems and leading healthcare systems vendors. Larry is a
skilled change agent with a track record of transforming IS
environments, improving staff morale, and increasing customer
satisfaction.
Prior to joining Outlook Associates, Larry worked for a major
healthcare software vendor as a VP in Research and Development
for a leading integrated clinical product and 2 years as a
VP, International Business Development in the UK where the
product was being installed to support the National Health
Service. Larry has over 12 years as a Chief Information Officer
in stand-alone hospitals, a large not-for-profit Catholic
healthcare system and US Naval Hospitals. He has led the selection
and implementation of integrated clinical systems for these
hospitals as well as departmental systems. Prior to being
a CIO, Larry was Director, Clinical Systems for several hospital-based
organizations (supporting hospitals and clinics) providing
the IT leadership role in the selection, implementation and
maintenance of clinical systems. In those roles he worked
actively with the clinical staff (physicians, nurses and other
medical personnel) helping define needs, select the proper
IS to support those needs, and lead the implementation efforts.
Representative Experience
- As Vice President, International Business Development,
with a major healthcare software vendor, Larry was a senior
executive on a two-year assignment in UK after the company
won a sub-contract to install clinical software in transformation
of National Health Service. Prior to his assignment in the
UK he held a senior leadership position in the research
and development department for the vendor. He managed 160
to 200 staff members and annual budgets of $12 to $15 million.
His responsibilities in the R&D department as well as
the UK position supported sales teams by providing information
about ongoing development and future product plans. He acted
as customer executive sponsor for several high-profile clients.
- As CIO for a large hospital organization, Larry worked
with the clinical and administrative leadership of the respective
organizations to develop an IS Strategic Plan. He then presented
the plan to the boards and secured a budget to implement
the high-priority projects. As CIO he has led selection
processes that have evaluated all of the major software
vendors that support hospitals and clinics. He has implemented,
operated and maintained most of the major healthcare software
vendor’s products.
- As Directory, Clinical Services in Information Technology
for several Healthcare Organizations, Larry worked with
physicians, nurses, other clinical staff and administrative
personnel to facilitate the formal documentation of their
requirements and then led the selection and implementation
process for order entry, results reporting, clinical decision
support, pharmacy, radiology, laboratory and other systems.
With a large Healthcare Organization in Southern California,
Larry co-led a selection and implementation project for
the selection and implementation of a totally integrated
system for a large multi-entity IDN which included administrative,
clinical and financial systems.
- Larry also has 8 years as a practicing Clinical Dietitian
working as part of the healthcare team in hospitals supporting
all aspects of the nutritional support of surgical and medical
conditions including supporting dialysis centers. This clinical
experience makes Larry knowledgeable and sensitive to the
unique requirements of automated support of the clinical
process.
